Email Scams

The objective of many email schemes is to trick you into providing information about yourself or your bank accounts, so that the perpetrator can steal your money or your identity. Another familiar trick is the “advance fee” scam, in which the perpetrator seeks to have you send him an advance payment to help transfer a large sum of money, or to pay “taxes” on a prize he says you’ve won. If the email message appears suspicious, forward it to SPAM@uce.gov. Do not reply to the sender. A helpful website on email spam can be found at www.ftc.gov/spam.
