PRESS ADVISORY

Attorney General Baker Announces Formation Of An Election Task Force And Creation Of A Voter Hotline To Answer Election-related Legal Questions

October 10, 2008

The upcoming elections have generated a great deal of voter interest and may result in one of the highest turnouts in recent history. Early voting seems to be moving at a fast pace and voter registration has been significant in many counties all over the state. Accordingly, I have established both an Election Task Force as well as a voter hotline to answer election-related legal questions as we approach the November 4, 2008 General Election. The Task Force will be comprised of attorneys in my office versed in election law, and callers to the hotline will be referred to members of this Task Force for elections-related legal questions. In addition, listed below please find other sources of information for voting-related questions. I am hopeful that this election will go smoothly and that all registered voters will have the opportunity to have their voices heard.

Some commonly asked questions may be answered without calling the voter hotline.

  • To determine your poll location, you can go here.  You will need to enter your first initial, last name, county of residence, and your month, day and year of birth in order to determine your poll location.

  • You can determine the address and telephone number of your local election registrar by going here and selecting your county from the drop-down menu.

  • If you are aware of instances of voter intimidation, coercion or threats based upon a voter's race, color, religion or national origin, the United States Department of Justice has jurisdiction to investigate and, if warranted, bring criminal action for those activities. You may contact the Department of Justice with those concerns at (800) 253-3931.

For any other elections-related legal questions, please feel free to contact my office's Voter Hotline at (404) 651-9303.
